Parkshore

The West Ashley area was the first major residential suburban community outside of downtown Charleston, South Carolina. Homes for sale in West Ashley SC were available and popular as early as the mid-20th century, between the Stono and Ashley Rivers and the Intracoastal Waterway on the southwest side of historic Charleston. As residential neighborhoods were established here, lots of stores, businesses, banks, libraries, schools, churches and other commercial enterprises developed in abundance. Because of its convenient location, West Ashley residents could get to work, school or shopping in downtown Charleston within five to ten minutes yet take advantage of the affordable housing available back across the river. Then again, residents in West Ashley had all they needed in their own community, if they never went downtown.
The dawn of the 21st century has seen a revitalization and renaissance of the West Ashley community as enlarged highways, a new regional shopping mall, new commercial developments and rebirth in old residential areas has occurred. New gated communities and condominiums have been built and homes remodeled. Easy access to I-26, I-526, Charleston International Airport and its Boeing facility, and surrounding islands and beaches solidifies West Ashley’s reputation as a highly desired residential location while well-maintained and newly renovated established housing retains its distinction as an extremely affordable real estate market.
At the northern end of the West Ashley area is one of its nicest neighborhoods: Parkshore. Parkshore is located just off Sam Rittenburg Boulevard near the Cosgrove Bridge over the Ashley River. Situated in the highly desirable “inside Mark Clark corridor” five minutes from downtown Charleston, Parkshore is a community of large brick single story ranch and traditional two story homes with large square footage (2200-4500 square feet) floor plans and spacious yards. Many homes have glorious marsh and river views, some of Duck Island out in the Ashley River. Most of the houses were constructed in the 1960s and 1970s, but some were built as late as the 1980s. All are well constructed and each successive owner has continuously maintained most.  Neighborhood and home amenities include:

  • Public water and sewer
  • Cable and Trash pickup
  • Neighborhood swimming pool and swim team
  • Tennis court
  • Play park
  • Ceramic tile in bathrooms
  • Hardwood floors
  • Wood burning fireplaces

Parkshore Park is a community recreation center on ten acres that features two tennis courts, two half basketball courts, as well as a baseball/softball field, a tree-shaded playground, picnic tables and benches, a covered area, and wooded areas with walking trails that connect to paths to other surrounding neighborhoods. Public parking is also provided.
Residents love the open marsh, river vistas and the spacious homes. Residents also enjoy the family friendly atmosphere that is promoted by the park and its amenities and swim team activities. Homes are placed on the market infrequently in Parkshore, so buyers interested in the area should contact View Properties Charleston to stay abreast of real estate activity.
